week 12(?) predictions

10-5 last week:

GB over DET
[no comment]

DAL over OAK
[no comment]

NYG over DEN
[Yes, sorry Denver but the ride is over for awhile]

ATL over TB
[Could be close. Matt Ryan will play well.]

MIA over BUF
[Ricky Williams will get another 100 yards]

PHI over WAS
[Destroyed]

SEA over STL
[Rookie QB for Rams will play I think]

CAR over NYJ
[Could go the other way, but I see Delhomme improving and the RBs running]

CIN over CLE
[Destroyed]

IND over HOU
[Close game, potential upset.]

SD over KC
[no comment]

SF over JAX
[Willis will contain much of the Jags offense.]

MIN over CHI
[No comment]

TEN over ARI
[would this be an upset?]

PIT over BAL
[close game, potentially the other way around.]

NE over NO
[Brady and Co...will put an end to Saints undefeated season. A proper ending.]

Week 11 predictions

7-8 last week!!! I was awful!

CAR over MIA
[I think it might actually be a blow out. Ronnie Brown is hurt and Carolina is playing much better]

IND over BAL
[Much closer than one might think. I think inevitably Manning will get his 3 TDs.]

DAL over WAS
[I just picture a sloppy win for Dallas. Did you know Campbell leads all QBs with highest 1st down % per attempt????!]

CLE over DET
[Yes, my risk pick. Somehow Jamal Lewis will make this game manageable enough for Cleveland to barely win this game. Stafford will have a better than average game. It could go either way though. I think the Lions are generally better, but I see the Browns somehow surprising the Lions at home.]

SD over DEN
[Yes, Denver has fallen flat. San Diego is on the rise.]

NE over NYJ
[I think this might be a blow out. Patriots are pissed off from last week and they play best when they're angry.]

CIN over OAK
[I had a strange urge to make this game an upset. But I'm going to say it isn't.]

PHI over CHI
[Another bad week for Cutler. He has 17 ints this year. I see 20 at the end of this game.]

HOU over TEN
[Could be a close game. Tennessee's winning streak comes to a close in a close game. Chris Johnson won't have as much of an effect. Vince Young will have to throw more. Houston defense will sack him a lot. Young will fumble.]
SF over GB
[A minor upset. Aaron Rodgers can only take so many sacks. It will be high scoring.]

JAX over BUF
[Garrard won't throw enough for Buffalo's grand secondary to have an effect.]

PIT over KC
[No comment]

MIN over SEA
[No comment]

NYG over ATL
[Very close game. I think somehow both teams will look spectacular in this game. Matt Ryan particularly in a loss.]

NO over TB
[Freeman will have his first atrocious game.]

ARI over STL
[I see this being closer than one would imagine.]

Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Week 10 predictions

9-4 last week. My worst week.

SF over CHI
[tough pick, but I think Willis, and Gore, will put SF just over]

ATL over CAR
[Matt Ryan will look like Matt Ryan]

MIA over TB
[Can't see TB winning two in a row]

MIN over DET
[no comment]

NYJ over JAC
[The rest might help Jets]

PIT over CIN
[I don't think it will be as close as most people think]

NO over STL
[no comment]

TEN over BUF
[Yes, 3 in a row]

DEN over WAS
[I think it will be close somehow]

OAK over KC
[My risk pick of the week.]

ARI over SEA
[Warner will have another big game.]

DAL over GB
[Rodgers will get sacked a lot]

PHI over SD
[Close game]

NE over IND
[Now the Saints will remain the only undefeated team]

BAL over CLE
[No comment. Browns should play Ratliff]

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

Week 9 predictions

11-2 again last week.

ATL over WAS
[no comment]

ARI over CHI
[I think it will be close. Warner rarely has horrible games back to back. It should be high scoring.]

IND over HOU
[Close one. Schaub will get back to form. Manning may actually get sacked more than he has all year combined.]

CIN over BAL
[Somehow Palmer will pass around Ed Reed.]

JAC over KC
[Chris Chambers will really help this team once he gets used to being there.]

GB over TB
[Destroyed]

NE over MIA
[I think it will be quite easy for Patriots]

NO over CAR
[Not even close.]

DET over SEA
[About time for another win. This one seems possible.]

TEN over SF
[Yep, two in a row.]

NYG over SD
[Norv Turner possibly in trouble.]

DAL over PHI
[Close. Somehow McNabb, or someone important, will get hurt on the Eagles.]

DEN over PIT
[Close, close game.]

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Week 8 predictions

11-2 last week:

BAL over DEN
[I think BAL defense will finally hand Denver a loss]

HOU over BUF
[May be closer than one thinks]

CHI over CLE
[No comment]

DAL over SEA
[Romo will throw all over the place. Running may be harder.]

MIA over NYJ
[More surprises will put MIA just over]

IND over SF
[no comment..Alex Smith will look ok]

PHI over NYG
[Close close game]

DET over STL
[Steven Jackson will be the MVP though]

SD over OAK
[No comment]

TEN over JAX
[Finally a win, regardless who the QB is. It's just about that time.]

MIN over GB
[Favre never fails in the most drama-ridden games]

ARI over CAR
[Delhomme benched]

NO over ATL
[Close game]

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Week 7 predictions

GB over CLE
[For some reason I think CLE will play it's best game in awhile.]

HOU over SF
[It will be a good game if Gore can break through HOU defense. Schaub will probably only throw 3 TDs, may have more INTs this week than usual as well.]

SD over KC...change that KC over SD
[I Freudian-slippingly want to give this to KC, but all logic tells me to go with SD..screw it...I'm going with KC]

IND over STL
[Won't even be close]

NE over TB
[Sadly Josh Johnson will be destroyed and cries for Freeman will begin. I think Johnson will eventually be good if given more chances.]

MIN over PIT
[I think MIN will win convincingly. The defense will return at least one, possibly two, TDs against PIT offense. Favre will throw at least one TD (I think he'll throw some INTs though) and At least Taylor, or Peterson will score, and possibly two FGs. So about 34 points. Pittsburgh will get one DEF TD as well, one FG, and an offensive score. About 17 points.]

BUF over CAR
[I like Delhomme, but he might throw 5 INTs against BUF as well. He's playing like Aikman did his last year.]

NYJ over OAK
[I can't see the Jets playing as bad as last week again, nor the Raiders playing as well as last week again.]

CIN over CHI
[I think Cutler is improving with his team. This will be close, but Benson will outdo Forte and that will make a difference.]

DAL over ATL
[This all depends on if Turner can be stopped by the Dallas D atleast partially. I'm also supposing the RBs on DAL are healthier than they are. Ware needs to pressure Ryan.]

NO over MIA
[It will be a surprisingly good showing.]

ARI over NYG
[Revenge. An upset.]

PHI over WAS
[McNabb will take his anger from last weeks loss over the impotent WAS]

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Friday, October 16, 2009

Week 6 predictions

10-4 last week

HOU def CIN
[I think this game could be close. I feel Houston will limit Benson.]

GB def DET
[I think this game will be close, especially if Culpepper is QB and Johnson is playing.]

JAX def STL
[Jags will take their last loss out on the Rams]

MIN def BAL
[Close game, sloppy game for Favre, I think.]

NO def NYG
[It should be a fairly fun game, but I think the Saints will be a few scores ahead.]

PIT def CLE
[Destroyed, Ratliff enters]

TB def CAR
[Johnson will surprised the Panthers.]

KC def WAS
[Redskins will be wholly ineffective.]

PHI def OAK
[Vick will get to play because the Raiders will lose the game in the first quarter.]

ARI def SEA
[Close game]

NE def TEN
[Collins won't play poorly, but Young will enter.]

NYJ def BUF
[close game.]

ATL def CHI
[Another close game. Ryan will be a TD ahead.]

DEN def SD
[Will somehow destroy them. Orton will blunder into a blowout.]

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Week 5

10-4 last week

Predictions this week:

BAL over CIN
[I think this might be another Def feast for BAL]

NYG over OAK
[This game will removed Russell at QB]

DAL over KC
[This game will be sloppy. DAL will somehow win.]

CAR over WAS
[Low scoring game]

MIN over STL
[Favre will throw under 20 times]

PHI over TB
[I think Josh Johnson will play well though]

PIT over DET
[no comment]

BUF over CLE
[and it will be surprisingly close. I think Derek Anderson and Braylon Edwards will look better]

ATL over SF
[I think it will be close.]

HOU over ARI
[Somehow the Cardinals will blunder]

DEN over NE
[Risk! Somehow Orton will toss it on a defenders head it reflects into Marshall's hands for the winning TD]

JAX over SEA
[no comment]

IND over TEN
[Now, Young comes in]

MIA over NYJ
[Things begin to fall for the young offense]

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

predictions week 4

Week 4-

CHI over DET
[I'd be very surprised if Det keeps up.]

CIN over CLE
[Anderson will look worse than Quinn. Ratliff may get a shot.]

HOU over OAK
[Although closer than you might think. I don't think Schaub will be as effective against this defense]

IND over SEA
[no comment]

JAX over TEN
[Vince Young enters about now, or after the game.]

NYG over KC
[I really like the Giant receivers]

BAL over NE
[My risk pick. Baltimore looks too good overall. Patriots seem psychologically disadvantaged despite their talent. Also injuries.]

TB over WAS
[Possible risk pick. I think Josh Johnson might be a surprise factor.]

BUF over MIA
[I don't think Henne is quite ready yet. It's about time for the Bills to look as good as they did in their loss in week 1.]

NO over NYJ
[I'd be shocked if the Jets won. The Saints ground game is as good as their passing game.]

DAL over DEN
[This should be obvious, but somehow Orton will get hammered in the last second by Ware, fumble into Moreno's arms, and he runs it in for the last second TD to put the up by one point, game over. Possibly. But I'll say Dallas barely stops it.]

SF over STL
[Obviously.]

PIT over SD
[I think PIT starts getting back on track now. Tomlinson won't be 100%]

MIN over GB
[Packers have been overachieving. Favre is a master of will power throughout his career. I think Favre will do more in this game then he will in all the games except for the next GB match up.]

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

record

11-5 this week I'm doing better than most of the experts so far this season.

Thursday, September 24, 2009

Predictions Week 3

1. BAL over CLE
[It shouldn't even be close.]

2. WAS over DET
[I think this game will be close. I don't think the Redskins are really that good. Stafford is slowly improving. As is the rest of the team.]

3. HOU over JAX
[I think Schaub will have another great game. This game should be close.]

4. ATL over NE
[Yep. Falcons look very strong whereas the Patriots have looked very strong sometimes.]

5. GB over STL
[Poor Rams.]

6. NYG over TB
[Leftwich will prove he's tough in a loss again]

7. NYJ over TEN
[Close, and only because the strengths of TEN are nullified by the Jets defense. I don't think the Jets are really the better team.]

8. KC over PHI
[This could go either way, but the Eagles have more important injuries.]

9. MIN over SF
[Time for the 49ers to look even more human.]

10. NO over BUF
[Brees will have a tougher time, but shall prevail.]

11. CHI over SEA
[Especially with the Hasselbeck injury]

12. CIN over PIT
[My risk pick. A weaker secondary may help Palmer achieve a pro bowl-like week for once.]

13. DEN over OAK
[Two bad team. Orton will fumble the ball into Brandon Marshall's hands who will run it in for the last TD needed for the win.]

14. MIA over SD
[Close game. Another risk pick of mine.]

15. IND over ARI
[Colts secondary will nullify Warner's ability even if he completes most of his passes.]

16. DAL over CAR
[It will be close.]

Monday, September 21, 2009

record

Total: 23-10
Week 2: 10-6
Week 1: 13-4

Friday, September 18, 2009

Week 2 Predictions

1. ATL over CAR
[much closer than it may seem. I think Delhomme will somewhat rectify himself, but still lose.]

2. MIN over DET
[Destruction. Stafford three more INTs in his learning process. Peterson 180 yards again. Favre will play it safe.]

3. GB over CIN
[I think it will be close. However, I see Palmer getting sacked and fumbling too often]

4. ARI over JAX
[Cardinals will look more like they did last year. I see a blow out.]

5. KC beats OAK
[Close game, I think Croyle will play and make it a hard decision when Cassel comes back. If Cassel plays, I see Oak possibly winning.]

6. NE beats NYJ
[I think Sanchez will look like a rookie. Patriots will win easily.]

7. NO beats PHI
[This is whether or not McNabb is back or not. If Kolb is in it will be a blowout.]

8. HOU beats TEN
[This will be close. The DL will get to the immobile Collins.]

9. WAS beats STL
[This won't be a blowout, only because the Redskins offense isn't designed to do that to anyone.]

10. BUF beats TB
[I think it will be close. Leftwich will look like a winner with an 0-2 record.]

11. SEA beats SF
[Probably not an interesting game.]

12. PIT beats CHI
[Demolished. Cutler will throw INTs. Steelers may not necessarily score a lot, but they will score.]

13. DEN beats CLE
[In overtime, on another Orton miracle play.]

14. BAL beats SD
[No, LT will hurt them. Flacco is on the ascent.]

15. DAL beats NYG
[I see a sloppy game won by field goals. Folk has the stronger leg.]

16. IND beats MIA
[Close game. Two accurate QBs. Similar running talent.]

Monday, September 14, 2009

Week 1

So far I'm: 13-3 on my predictions.

QB situations for each team:

Titans: Collins looked pretty good most of the game. I constantly underestimate him. I think he deserves to be the starter, as much as I want Young to play.

Steelers: This may be the year Roethlisberger starts putting up a ton of passing numbers, which means also 20 interceptions in a winning season.

Dolphins: no comment

Falcons: no comment

Chiefs: I think Croyle won the #2 job. Possibly #1 if Cassel doesn't play somewhat similarly in week 2.

Ravens: Flacco is a passer. I'm glad the team realized that.

Eagles: Now is Kolb's chance to make Vick unnecessary. If he doesn't fill in well until McNabb gets back he may never have a chance again.

Panthers: I'm glad that they're going to give Delhomme one more chance. It may be due to the fact that Josh McCown is now out for the season. Nevertheless, any Free Agent they sign can be nearly assured a chance to start soon. Jeff Garcia. Testaverde!?

Broncos: Orton's game is the epitome of his playing still. That is, not very well, but then getting lucky and winning. If it works, it works.

Bengals: Carson Palmer has much more work to do. He's throwing these terrible short passes for losses.

Vikings: Favre looks 5 years older than last year and playing like he knows it, which is his best trait right now. Very great decoy. Glad they signed him.

Browns: Quinn had a TD called back. He'll get better.

Jets: My prediction is that Sanchez throws about 18 tds and 18 ints this year, and the Jets go about 10-6.

Texans: Schaub constantly underwhelms.

Jaguars: no comment

Colts: no comment

Lions: Stafford might have one of those 10td 30int seasons. He showed a little potential. I just want him to be better than Sanchez eventually.

Saints: Brees could have had 8 TDs. It's no fun for Brees when he's winning.

Cowboys: Romo's stats are deceiving. He was a lot sloppier than the 140 rating admits.

Bucs: Leftwich is one of the toughest people I ever saw. He wants to play, he wants to win, he'll die if he must, but he'll stay in the game.

49ers: Shaun Hill is very boring to watch

Cardinals: Warner......

Redskins: Campbell is not the answer

Giants: Manning has the WRs he needs. He'll be fine.

Rams: no comment

Seahawks: no comment

Bears: Cutler needs better WRs or he'll have 25 ints.

Packers: Rodgers disappointed me.

Bills: Edwards looks like he's finally on his way to being the best Bills QB since Jim Kelly. The team looked great as well despite the loss.

Patriots: Brady was rusty at first, before turning into Brady at the end of the 4th quarter. I expect him to pass for about 4,000 yards and 35 TDs this year.

Chargers: Rivers was not Rivers in week 1. A big reason why the Raiders almost won.

Raiders: JeMarcus Russell still isn't ready, but I think he should play every game this year and let the Raiders decide what to do with him next year. He had a really nice block at one point in the game. He's huge, he shoved a defender twice until he went out of bounds and then he bull rushed another one.

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

Week 1 Predictions

1. PIT beats TEN
[Collins has a horrible game. Cries for Young begin.]

2. ATL beats MIA
[close game, with Turner rushing for 200 years]

3. BAL beats KC
[Cassel plays, but not very well]

4. PHI beats CAR
[close game, lots of running from both teams]

5. CIN beats DEN
[Destroys them, Palmer back to normal. Orton is ineffective while playing partially injured.]

6. MIN beats CLE
[Destroys them, Favre puts up a good showing. Quinn plays moderately well despite not putting up points.]

7. HOU beats NYJ
[Sanchez plays like a rookie. Schaub puts up numbers.]

8. IND beats JAX
[close game]

9. NO beats NO
[Demolished, but Stafford outplays Sanchez for week 1. Brees well on his way to breaking records.]

10. DAL beats TB
[Destroys them. Leftwich sacked at least 7 times.]

11. ARI beats SF
[Sloppy game.]

12. NYG beat WAS
[Close game. Campbell outplays Manning, but still loses.]

13. SEA beat STL
[It won't be too close. I predict both QBs get hurt at some point in the game.]

14. GB beats CHI
[Large victory. Cutler starts off rusty. Rodgers throws 3 tds at least.]

15. NE beats BUF
[Destroyed the old 2007 way.]

16. SD beats OAK
[Almost an upset. I think it will be close. Oakland offense will show some promise for the future.]

Free Agents (in approx. order of ability):

Jeff Garcia

John David Booty
[Shows promise. If he hadn't been on the Vikings he wouldn't have been cut.]

Chase Daniel
[UFA, outplayed all other Redskins QBs in phenomenal preseason.]

J.P. Losman
[set to be star in UFL]

Cleo Lemon
[probably the most ready ready veteran]

Richard Bartel
[Bartel being cut by the Browns is surprising!]

Joey Harrington

Quinn Gray

Damon Huard
[Isn't athletic, but was SF best QB when he was cut. Excellent backup.]

Brock Berlin

Rhett Bomar

Adam DiMichele
[UFA, played one excellent preseason game for Eagles]

Anthony Wright

Marques Tuiasosopo

Gus Frerotte

Brook Bollinger

Jeff Rowe

Matt Baker

Brian Brohm

Andrew Walter

Hunter Cantwell

Ingle Martin

Rudy Carpenter

Chris Pizzotti
[I think he'll become a star in another league and comeback strong]

Drew Henson

Brett Basanez

Tyler Palko

Alex Brink

Drew Willy

Andre Woodson
[Once promising QB hasn't even had a good series yet]

Jamie Martin

Mike Reilly

Todd Boeckman

D.J. Shockley
[might be the fastest QB, but had a 12 rating in a full preseason of action]

Brad Johnson
[practically retired since 2004 even though he played]

Jeff George
[involuntarily retired]

Vinny Testaverde
[retired, distant option]

Preseason Over

With the preseason over here are a few random things and some of my thoughts:

- Jaguars definitely need a better backup QB. Todd Bouman threw the most passes in the
preseason (80) and barely completed half of them for a 69 rating.
- On the other hand, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bills backup, threw almost as many passes and completed
almost 68% of his passes.
- Richard Bartel might kick Brett Ratliff off the Browns. He came out of nowhere and went 15 of
18 on passes, 107 rating. Ratliff was marvelous last year in the preseason, but this year he
was bad enough to justify being cut.
- AJ Feeley played well enough that someone should trade for him. I think the Jaguars should
think about that. Possibly the Patriots.
- Matt Schaub completed 76% of his passes.
- Michael Vick didn't throw many passes, but did complete 73%. His rating was a 48. Averaged 3 yards a pass and threw an INT.
- Matt Leinart had the most yards with 507.
- Aaron Rodgers led with 6 TDs (0 Ints) and he didn't even play the last week.
- David Carr played like a 1st round, 1st overall pick.
- Kyle Orton and Matthew Stafford each had 4 Ints.
- Damon Huard was cut by SF despite having a 125 rating in the preseason.
- Mark Brunell had 4 passes for over 40 yards.
- Joey Harrington was sacked 9 times.

Sunday, August 30, 2009

Teams QB situation as of August 30th

Bears:
Jay Cutler, Caleb Hanie, Brett Basanez
[Hanie seems to be, surprising, a decent backup. He's one of the worst QBs in the new Madden. He should at least be serviceable.]

Bengals:
Carson Palmer, J.T. O'Sullivan, Jordan Palmer

Bills:
Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzgerald, Matt Baker, Gibran Hamdan
[Edwards isn't showing much improvement, but he's sadly their best option]

Broncos:
Kyle Orton, Chris Simms, Tom Brandstater, Ingle Martin

Browns:
Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson, Brett Ratliff, Richard Bartel
[I'm disappointed in Ratliff's preseason, I was hoping he'd come out of no where and take the #1 spot Bartel may take Ratliff's spot.]

Buccaneers:
Byron Leftwich, Luke McCown, Josh Freeman, Josh Johnson

Cardinals:
Kurt Warner, Matt Leinart, Brian St. Pierre, Tyler Palko
[Leinart played like Warner last week--almost 400 yards in one half, 3 TDs, 1 INT and some fumbles.]

Chargers:
Philip Rivers, Billy Volek, Charlie Whitehurst

Chiefs:
Matt Cassel, Tyler Thigpen, Brodie Croyle, Matt Gutierrez

Colts:
Peyton Manning, Jim Sorgi, Curtis Painter

Cowboys:
Tony Romo, Jon Kitna, Stephen McGee, Rudy Carpenter

Dolphins:
Chad Pennington, Chad Henne, Pat White

Eagles:
Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb, A.J. Feeley, Michael Vick
[Feeley has had an amazing preseason. I think they'll keep 4QBs. Once Vick is allowed to play, I think Feeley, or Kolb, will move to the inactive list so Vick can play in special situation.]

Falcons:
Matt Ryan, D.J. Shockley, John Parker Wilson
[Wilson may become 2nd string]

49ers:
Shaun Hill, Alex Smith, Damon Huard, Nate Davis
[I'd gamble and go with either Huard or Davis. Huard would minimize mistakes, but also wouldn't throw TDs. Davis is a highly talented project player who seems ahead of schedule in the preseason.]

Giants:
Eli Manning, David Carr, Rhett Bomar, Andre Woodson
[Surprising good group. Manning is a top 10 starter, Carr a top 10 backup, Bomar, a top 10 3rd stringer.]

Jaguars:
David Garrard, Todd Bouman

Jets:
Mark Sanchez, Kellen Clemens, Erik Ainge, Chris Pizzotti
[I think Ainge should get to play all of the last preseason game to see if he's a better option than Clemens at #2.]

Lions:
Daunte Culpepper, Matthew Stafford, Drew Stanton
[Stanton has had an amazing preseason]

Packers:
Aaron Rodgers, Brian Brohm, Matt Flynn
[Rodgers, this preseason, is playing like Tom Brady's regular season in 2007. Did Brohm finally surpass Flynn? Why isn't Flynn playing?]

Panthers:
Jake Delhomme, Josh McCown, Matt Moore, Hunter Cantwell

Patriots:
Tom Brady, Andrew Walter, Brian Hoyer

Raiders:
JaMarcus Russell, Jeff Garcia, Charlie Frye, Bruce Gradkowski
[someone will be cut and star in the UFL]

Rams:
Marc Bulger, Kyle Boller, Keith Null
[The rookie may get to play at some point.]

Ravens:
Joe Flacco, Troy Smith, John Beck, Cleo Lemon, Drew Willy
[Troy Smith is a great backup to have. He's sort of like a Frank Reich, or Jason Garrett, that can run. You never want him to start. Just finish games in an emergency.]

Redskins:
Jason Campbell, Todd Collins, Colt Brennan, Chase Daniel
[Brennan might get cut. What if Daniel worked himself to #1, doesn't seem impossible.]

Saints:
Drew Brees, Mark Brunell, Joey Harrington
[Brunell may fall to 3rd string if he plays like he did in week 3 in week 4.]

Seahawks:
Matt Hasselbeck, Seneca Wallace, Mike Teel, Jeff Rowe

Steelers:
Ben Roethlisberger, Charlie Batch, Dennis Dixon, Mike Reilly
[Big Ben needs to be careful. He doesn't put up pretty numbers, but he's the most important person on the offense.]

Texans:
Matt Schaub, Dan Orlovsky, Rex Grossman, Alex Brink

Titans:
Kerry Collins, Vince Young, Patrick Ramsey

Vikings:
Brett Favre, Sage Rosenfels, Tavaris Jackson, John David Booty
[After Jackson's last game, who do you let go of?]

Free Agents:
Kevin O'Connell
[just cut by the Patriots]
Adam DiMichele
[cut by Eagles, despite a decent preseason showing, 64% 130 yrds 1TD 95 rating]
Drew Henson
J.P. Losman
Anthony Wright
Marques Tuiasosopo
Brooks Bollinger
Gus Frerotte
Jamie Martin
Brock Berlin
Brad Johnson
Quinn Gray
[overall, very weak free agent pool. Look for trades to occur if someone needs a QB. Gray and O'Connell should be picked up by someone.]

Aaron Rodgers through week 3 of the preseason

If he plays like this all year he'll surpass even the best Brett Favre season.

I'm not much of a fan of him--although I was when he was drafted--but I think he'll throw 33 TDs 12 INTs and about 4,000 yards for a plus 100 rating.

Welcome to the NFLquarteback blog!

Greetings,

My purpose for this blog is mostly aimless. I'm merely a knowledgeable football fan with a direct interest in the quarterback position.
Football dynasties have risen and fallen due to the ability, or inability, of quarterbacks throughout the history of professional football. The drafting of a rookie quarterback in the first round usually causes the most anticipation going into the regular season. Will he be a Manning, or a Leaf? Will this kid be the face of our franchise, or its undoing shame? Did we pick the best of all possible options? And when will he be ready?
Then of course, there are the unknown quarterbacks who exceed expectations. The caliber of the exceeding, of course, differs. The Redskins once drafted Heath Shuler, now a politician, at the beginning of a draft and later drafted Gus Frerotte. Shuler was soon displaced by Frerotte, and soon out of the league. For all of Frerotte's faults at quarterback, he exceeded the ability of a 7th round draft pick, and defeated a 1st rounder. Perhaps Shuler would have benefited for sitting on the bench a few years and returned to the field as an enlightened quarterback.
My definition of an "enlightened quarterback" is one who either sits for a long time, or one who starts off badly, sits for awhile, and then emerges as something unpredictable. The best example off the top of my head is Rich Gannon. His first season was 1987 with the Vikings. He did not really play until 1990 through 1992. At that point, he was not a good quarterback. At this point, he's mainly on the bench. He emerges, "enlightened", by 1998 and goes on to have five phenomenal years before injuries end his career. There are others.
However, many quarterbacks are thrown into the fire without having their "padawan" stage of their career. They're knighted, given their armor and their sword, and sent into battle. They did not anscend through the Squire, Page, Knight process of learning the craft.
In this draft, we have three first rounders: Matthew Stafford, Mark Sanchez, and Josh Freeman. Sanchez will probably be "knighted" immediately. Stafford will probably resemble what I'll call the "page" stage, he will be anticipated to start at some point this season, and will be slowly worked into the games. Freeman could potentially sit out almost all year as a "squire". As you can see I've read too much history, and literature, but anyway. It's interesting to think about.
Since the Great Quarterback Class of 1983, the following QBs have been full time starters during their rookie seasons (that is played all 16 games, barring injury):

1984 - Warren Moon, Oilers (he doesn't count because he was in the CFL since 1978)
1989 - Troy Aikman, Cowboys (injured for 5 games), 9 Tds 18 Ints, 0-11 record.
1993 - Rick Mirer, Seahawks, 12 Tds 17 Ints, 6-10 record.
1998 - Peyton Manning, Colts, 26 Tds 28 Ints, 3-13 record.
2001 - Chris Weinke, Panthers, (29 year old rookie, out one game) 11 Tds 19 Ints, 1-14 record.
2002 - David Carr, Texans, 9 Tds 15 Ints, 4-12 record.
2008 - Matt Ryan, Falcons, 16 Tds 11 Ints, 11-5 record.
2008 - Joe Flacco, Ravens, 14 Tds 11 Ints, 11-5 record.

What can I discern from this? Not counting Warren Moon, this is what I notice: The immediate full-time starting of a QB throughout an entire rookie season, barring injury, is an exceptional rare thing. If we were going into the 2008 season, we would say that is never a successful thing to impliment (although Aikman and Manning ended up eventually emerging as legends). Then what happpened in 2008? Was it just due for a rookie to have a winning season, and so, was it coincidental that this occured with two QBs having winning records in their first season? Who knows. But regardless, it is rare. Since 1983, Ryan and Flacco are the only winning rookies. Since 1983, Aikman and Manning are the only rookies on this list (too soon for Ryan and Flacco) to have successful careers. If Ryan, and/or, Flacco make the Hall, then it appears to be approximately a 10 year difference between star QBs coming out of the full-time-rookie-starter crop of QBs. Will Sanchez, and possibly Stafford, follow the rule, or show that the rookie starter situation is entirely different now than it was in the past?

Anyway, that's my first post. More will follow, especially if I'm urged to do so.
